The flowers and berries contain various essential oils, bitter substances, carotenoids, flavonoids, and minerals such as potassium, vitamin C, vitamin A, and B vitamins. Elderberry (Sambucus) is divided into a dozen or so species. Most of them are also found in our latitudes, with the black elderberry (Sambucus nigra) being the most widespread in this country. In addition to the often slightly toxic sambunigrin, which decomposes when exposed to heat, its main ingredients are a high content of vitamin C and B vitamins. The berries also contain the plant pigments sambucin, sambicyanin, and chrysanthemin, which are classed as anthocyanidins or natural polyphenols.

Tip:
If your eyes are dry and irritated, a little detective work can be helpful: Find your specific trigger for the discomfort and then try to avoid it as best you can.
