Taurine is a familiar term to many, as it is often found in energy drinks – but what exactly is taurine, and what does it do in the human body? Another name for taurine is 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid. That may sound complicated, but put simply, taurine is an organic acid that is produced during the metabolism of many animals. Taurine is a breakdown product of the amino acid cysteine. For humans, it is a semi-essential nutrient, meaning the body can produce taurine on its own – provided it gets the necessary building blocks (cysteine, methionine, and vitamin B6) from the diet.
Of course, taurine can also be obtained from food – but it is found exclusively in animal-based foods: meat, fish, eggs, and dairy. A restricted or vegan diet can therefore lead to a taurine deficiency.
The name taurine comes from the Greek word “taurus”, which means bull or ox. It was named this way because taurine was first isolated in 1827 by Leopold Gmelin and Friedrich Tiedemann from ox bile.
Today, taurine has little to do with bulls, since it is now synthetically produced. The advantage is that this makes it completely vegan, so even people with a plant-based diet don’t have to miss out on it.

What does taurine do?
Taurine is present throughout the body, but about 75% is stored in muscle cells, while the rest is mainly found in the heart, brain, and blood. The topic of taurine is a fascinating one because, although we now understand many of its functions, there are still many open questions.

Here are some of taurine’s clearly defined functions:
It supports the formation of bile salts (so-called bile acid conjugates) and is therefore part of the liver–gallbladder–intestine (enterohepatic) cycle
In muscle cells, it acts as an osmosis regulator, helping sodium and potassium move through cell membranes and keeping electrical membrane potential stable
Taurine deficiency is also known to negatively affect the immune system

Taurine is especially well absorbed on an empty stomach. You can also take the capsules at different times of the day. Although taurine is often associated with energy drinks, it has nothing to do with caffeine, so you can even take it shortly before bedtime without worrying about sleep issues.
