Chaga, known in Siberia as the “Gift of God” or the “Mushroom of Immortality,” has been used as a folk remedy for various ailments since the 16th century. Unlike most mushrooms, this medicinal fungus is as hard as wood. It grows on trees—mainly birch—and is black like coal, with an irregular structure. The Japanese call it the “Diamond of the Forest,” while the Chinese refer to it as the “King of Plants.” Among all tree-growing medicinal mushrooms, it is considered the most nutrient-dense.
Despite its extraordinary status as a healing mushroom in various cultures, it remains largely unknown in the Western world. To survive even the harshest environments, Chaga concentrates a wealth of natural defense compounds—making it incredibly valuable.
Chaga is typically not harmful to the tree but forms a symbiotic relationship with it. In the process of supporting and healing the tree, it produces a variety of beneficial substances such as phytosterols, phenols, and enzymes.
